I’ve had lucid dreams all my life. It all started when I was around 13 years old — the same time I started researching the concept of conscious dreaming. Nowadays I experience a lucid dream about once every two weeks. Sometimes it happens by chance and other times it’s because I’ve willed my mind to do it.
The truth about lucid dreaming is that anyone can do it; it’s all just a trick of the mind. If you simply buy into the concept of being able to actively control your dreams, you’re already 90% there. The rest can be achieved through tools and tricks that don’t even involve meditating for three hours before bed. Try some of these tonight to have the lucid dream you’ve always dreamed of (pardon the pun).
1. Plug Your Nose and Breathe In
No, this isn’t some deep, relaxing, breathing technique. It’s called a reality check and it’s probably the easiest and most popular one around — according to the Reddit-sphere, at least. All you need to do is periodically plug your nose with your fingers as you go about your day and breathe in. You will notice that you obviously can’t breathe and therefore will note to yourself, “This isn’t a dream.” By doing this throughout the day, you are implanting the habit into your subconscious mind, making it incredibly likely that you will repeat the habit in your dream tonight. When you do it in your dream, however, it’s going to feel a lot different. You’ll be able to breathe despite your nose being plugged. This freaky experience will tell you right away that you are dreaming and then BAM, you’re lucid.
2. Blue Calcite
This is one powerful crystal. I have personally experienced the incredible effects of this light blue stone after sleeping with it under my pillow one night. I bought it because I knew it was good for relaxation, but little did I know it’s also known for increasing focus and clarity in dreams. It gave me a more steady lens on what I was seeing in the dream realm so that everything was crystal clear. It was truly amazing. I still remember the experience in great detail to this day. After using the stone, be sure to ground yourself. It can leave you feeling a little light-headed.
3. Wake Up at 4AM
Also known as the WILD (Wake-Induced Lucid Dream) technique, this one is pretty much no fail. All you need to do is set your alarm for 4 am. Once you wake up, turn on your lamp and just hang out with yourself until 5 am. It may sound too easy to be true, but this is by far one of the most effective techniques to date. This goes back many centuries ago to when we would sleep twice, using the hour in between sleep sessions for prayer. I think our ancestors were onto something here.
4. Watch Lucid Dream Related Content
This is super easy to do, especially if you find yourself interested in the topic of dreaming in general. Movies such as The Matrix and Inception are about people who are essentially “awake” in a dream world. Just by watching lucid-dream related movies, you are imprinting the idea into your subconscious. Chances are you will see something from the movie you just watched in your dream tonight and it will make you realize, “Hey, this is all a dream!” Whenever I watch my favorite movie, Waking Life, I always end up having a lucid dream that same night.
5. Lucid Dream Tea
There are certain herbs out there that can really pump your lucid state. There’s one in particular that really works well for me and it’s called “Sweet Gale,” also called wise old grandmother in the Native American tradition. It is believed to aid lucidity in dreams as well as help you to dream with others. It’s calming yet leaves you incredibly grounded and focused. Brew a cup of “Sweet Gale” tea before bed and prepare to get lucid!
